As a Speaker, author, and blogger - using the pronoun “you” (second person) vs. “I” (first person) feels like the natural go-to. And yet, when spiritual speakers use the plural “you” when proclaiming how-to techniques or laws of the universe - I find myself getting rankled. My little inner God steps up and says, “oh, yeah? Hold my beer…” So, I know there is something calling to my adventurous, bigger-than-it-all, side within this paradox.
In all actuality, when I’m discussing the enormous world of the metaphysical (whether in a interview, blog article, or up on stage) speaking in second person sentences feels a bit like a cop-out. Perhaps it’s the, “safety within numbers” thing within using the plural “you” & “we”. Saying, “Your God-self” vs. “My God-self” is so much cushier and more comfortable. I feel like there is something hesitant of myself hiding in there.
But there is a boldness within using the first person. Something (lion-like) loudly proclaiming, “This is mine. This is me!” And I like her! I gravitate to her.
But, can I BE her?
When I think of how God would behave, talk, or use examples - first person comments are an “of course”. Perhaps, I have been playing “small” for so long that stepping into this version of myself just feels a bit scary and fraudulent. But the invitation, the exciting challenge remains.
Can I be so bold as to step up here? To say “I” instead of “you”. To open myself up to the unknown world within this simple shift of thinking and speaking and to lead by example rather than blanket-claiming a “we” that can never honestly be true or accurate.
The only legitimate and truthful statement is “I”.
