When it comes to shifting realities—or changing the channel—it never has to be a grind or a chore. It actually is a joy—the exact same way changing the channel on your radio to your favorite station is. There is an “ahhh” when you get there, a palpable release of some slight level of tension that you probably never even noticed.
In the same way shifting channels is easy, simple, and automatic—so is shifting your reality.
I used to have anxiety dreams. You know those dreams where you are back in high school, and you can’t find your locker, or you do, but you don’t know the combination to the lock? One I used to have a lot was that I forgot to feed animals I was pet-sitting or small animals in a cage—like for weeks.
After I would wake up from those dreams, that panicky feeling would stick with me throughout the day. It felt like a pit in my stomach, and it would arise unbidden (like those 3 a.m. anxiety wake-up calls).
Think of this like a song on the radio that makes you groan in dislike. You don’t analyze it, fight it, or force yourself to keep listening—you just change the station. When you apply that same approach to your reality, everything shifts.
Change the Channel
Once again, this is simple. Why gurus, influencers, and teachers make this a step-by-step process is beyond me. But let’s get started:
Hear three (or more) of your favorite sounds.
Taste three (or more) of your favorite flavors.
See three (or more) of your favorite images.
Say your favorite word three times.
What are three or more of your favorite smells, and can you (mentally) smell them?
If at first, it feels tough to come up with three—that’s fine. That’s just old “this is hard” programming (feels like anxiety, doesn’t it? Hmmmm.) that is completely untrue, and we are going to shift out of that reality. Don’t make this a big deal. Don’t make it into something you can do wrong. That’s just you listening to a country song that’ll bring you down. Change the channel.
Some of my favorite sounds are whale song, the ocean, the wind in pine trees, babies laughing, owl hoots, thunder, and good news.
What about favorite words? How about Wonderful! Extraordinary! Amazing. Easy. Fun. Joy. Congratulations. It can even be a bunch of words put together, like “We want you.” “Thank you.” or anything that shifts your radio station. This is my reality. This is my radio station. I say what goes.
Some of my favorite images are snowcapped mountains, a lonely lake inviting me to swim, my dog doing zoomies, butterflies doing their butterfly thing, my bank balance being much higher than I anticipated, opening my mailbox and finding a Christmas or birthday card, snowfall, Christmas lights—oh, geez, I could go on and on.
The thing about these exercises is their effect is immediate. And you will quickly find that you can easily come up with more than three. At first, it may feel like you can’t even think of one—but once the ball gets rolling, you will quickly find it picking up speed, and more and more examples will pop up.
Examples that may not even fit into the above categories, such as what it feels like to drive a new car. Or the first time you galloped on a horse, caught your first wave surfing, got your first strike in bowling, a hole-in-one golfing, won a lottery, got your first A in school, and on and on. Even if you never did any of these things, you can imagine it—and that alone changes the channel.
So, the next time you are lying in bed awake at 3 a.m. with that pit in your stomach or driving your car with a white-knuckled grip on the steering wheel—change the channel.
Start thinking of favorites. And if anything in you is saying it can’t be that easy—you get to change that channel too.
Remember—this is YOUR radio station (or TV, or whatever analogy you want to use). Anytime a thought, feeling, belief, or current experience isn’t what you want to experience—instead of overthinking it and forcing yourself to listen to that station because…why? Just push the button and rock on with your bad self.
